Toriyama sensei was born in 1955 in a small town in Toyama, Japan. From a young age, he displayed a talent and passion for art and comics. It was in 1984 that Toriyama sensei truly found his calling with Dragon Ball. Serializing it in Weekly Shonen Jump, he first introduced readers to Goku, Bulma and their quest to collect the dragon balls. Blending references to Chinese folklore with his own unique style and humor, Toriyama sensei crafted an energetic shonen adventure beloved by all ages. At its peak, Dragon Ball was outselling titles like Fist of the North Star, cementing Toriyama as a star mangaka.

When Dragon Ball concluded after 158 colourful chapters, fans demanded to know where Goku's journey continued. In 1988, Toriyama sensei answered their calls with the hit sequel Dragon Ball Z. Focusing on the conflicts with the invading Saiyans and Frieza, it amplified the series' dynamic battles and introductions like Super Saiyan that captured imaginations worldwide. Under his guidance, Dragon Ball Z became not only a ratings juggernaut anime but a cultural phenomenon.

After Dragon Ball Z finished its storied TV run, Toriyama wrote further adventures in manga format like 2002's Dragon Ball GT as well as editing histories and guidebooks. Although he stepped back from the spotlight later in life, his seminal works through the 80s and 90s ensured Dragon Ball's legacy for new generations of fans. In 1986, Toei Animation adapted Dragon Ball into an anime hit showcasing Goku's growth from boy to man.

When Dragon Ball ended its TV run in 1989, fans wondered where Goku and his friends' stories would continue. But Toriyama sensei had even grander plans in store.
