Today we are exploring the mystery and cultural impact of the Daruma Doll. An interesting topic indeed for anyone who enjoys Japan. We see them everywhere, but what do they mean?


Daruma were originally depicted in Buddhist icons, representing Bodhidharma - the monk who brought Zen to China. Legend says after nine years of meditation, his limbs atrophied but determination kept his spirit burning. Thus Daruma came to symbolize strength to continue towards goals even when facing adversity or setbacks.
